Hack Your Summer
Please note: This is not an HDSI initiative. It was started by UC San Diego alumnus DJ Patil (former U.S. Chief Data Scientist) and is shared here because it may be of interest to our CogSci and Data Science students.
Hack Your Summer is a free, four-week program for college students and recent grads who want to build something real over the summer and ship it publicly. It isn't an internship, a class, or a bootcamp. It's a structured sprint where you pick a project, build it with mentorship and a community of peers, and end up with a public-facing deliverable you can show future employers and collaborators.
Projects can take whatever form fits your interests: a data dashboard or technical tool, an investigative or research report, creative work like a podcast or zine, a community or advocacy initiative, or a physical prototype. Every week includes live fireside chats with leaders across AI, policy, media, and more, plus mentorship from people who've built careers at places like NASA, LinkedIn, Google, and Anthropic. Any major and experience level is welcome.
It's free and open, so there's no competitive application to stress over. The point is simply to build.
